Discover The Fastest Fish in The Ocean

Have you ever wondered what is the fastest fish in the ocean? If yes, then you are not alone. Some people know the largest fish in the ocean because whales are quite the popular figure in terms of marine creatures. However, not a lot of people know what the fastest swimmers are out there.

If you want to know who these speedsters are swimming rapidly through the ocean waters, then you came at the right moment. Below, we will be listing down some of the fastest swimmers in the world, and this is because there’s no definite answer when it comes to who is the fastest. So, if you want to learn more, read further down below.

Top 8 Fastest Fish In The Ocean

There’s still a wide debate on the fastest fish, but we’re not discussing that one here. So instead, we will be listing down the consensus eight of the fastest fishes here on earth.

1. Black Marlin

Clocking in at number one is the black marlin, swimming with a top speed of 129km/h. The black marlin is considered the fastest fish in the ocean. The black marlin is also considered the gold medal in the angler game, as catching one is equivalent to a gold medal.

The black marlin is found in tropical and subtropical waters, and its distinct feature is having a black-colored upper body and a silvery-white underbelly. They are of the billfishes family, a fish family known for their elongated jaw that resembles a sword.

2. Sailfish

Checking in at number two is the sailfish. Although some consider sailfish as the fastest one, this is still a hot topic of debate up to this very day. But we’ll set things aside and treat this majestic creature at number two. Although the sailfish has a top speed of 100km/h, one of the most distinctive features of this fish is its stunning dorsal fin, which looks like a mohawk.

This fish can also be found in tropical and subtropical waters, and if you want to find one, if you get lucky, they have a huge concentration down the coast of Florida. You can also find them near Papua New Guinea, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and the Philippines.

3. Swordfish

In case you are wondering, some of these fishes belong to the billfish family. So, their pronounced and elongated sword-type jaw should not surprise you. Speeding in at third place is the Swordfish. This elusive fish is quite an ordeal if you want to catch one.

The only time they were caught was when they got tagged in large fishing lines and nets. Luckily, they can be found in large bodies of water such as the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans. As their name suggests, they have this sword-like upper jaw and are quite like the bullet in the water.

4. Striped Marlin

Surprise, surprise, surprise! Another member of the billfish family, the striped marlin, clocks in at number four with a whopping 80km/h tops. Aside from being one of the fastest fishes in the ocean, they also can breach in the open water, leaving anglers flabbergasted. They can easily be distinguished due to the distinct stripes embedded in their body.

Fun fact, when these speedsters are excited, these stripes turn into violet. They can be found in various subtropical and tropical waters around the world. While they may not be as fast as their counterparts, they can put up a good show for fishermen and anglers.

5. Wahoo

A valued and prized game fish for anglers, the Wahoo clocks in at number 5 as the world's fastest fish in the ocean. Checking in at 77km/h, the Wahoo are mainly found in warm, tropical, and subtropical waters.

One of the best things, why this type of fish is a joy to be around is because they instantly bite whenever there’s a thing to be bitten. Their striped bodies closely resemble the striped marlin but without the elongated upper jaw.

6. Mako Sharks

The Mako sharks are considered the fastest type of shark species in the world, clocking in at 74km/h. They are sure to fire up those rapid bursting tails that catapult them like torpedoes.

Apart from being one of the fastest, they are also one of the scariest fish in the ocean as they can easily prey upon fishes equal to their sizes, such as dolphins, sailfish, and even other sharks. They are also on top of the list when it comes to shark attacks on humans. Yikes!

7. Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

Aside from being one of the most expensive meals on the menu, the Atlantic bluefin tuna is one of the fastest fish in the ocean, clocking in at 70km/h. They are one of the tastiest dishes in the world, and they are the primary fish when it comes to making sushi and sashimi.

And because of this particular reason, they are widely overfished and face extinction. They can be found in Atlantic waters and are quite large compared to other fishes on this list.

8. Blue Sharks

Another shark species on the list, the Blue sharks, ranks second in terms of the fastest shark type in the world. They clock in at 69km/h and love chilling cold water temperatures. Blue sharks are one of the most widely distributed fish in the world. As a result, you can find them in various cold waters.

What separates them from other fishes on this list is their fondness for the deep sea. Anglers alike have a hard time reeling a blue shark in as they can go as deep as they can be. Plus, various shark conservations shouldn’t be breached.
