How To Clean Your Jewelry: The Dos and Dont’s

A jewelry is meant to shine, but if it’s exposed to dust and dirt builds, it may lose its shine and might not bring that same sparkle as you would normally have. It is why cleaning your jewelry is the best way to go about it this problem.

However, cleaning isn’t ideal if you don’t know what to do. If you’re cleaning just to make it look clean, then there’s a likelihood that it may leave your jewelry looking dull and tarnished because you have done it the wrong way.

Fortunately, cleaning your shining-shimmering jewelry is possible without going to a professional cleaner. If you want to know more about it, below are some dos and don’ts on how to clean your jewelry. Check it out!

How To Clean Your Jewelry: DO’s

As we’ve mentioned, you can clean your jewelry at home without needing professional help, and it can help save money and time as some cleaning ingredients can be found at home. Here are some ways how to clean your jewelry the right way.

DO: Go For The Traditional Way

One of the simplest methods of cleaning your jewelry is soap and jewelry. If your jewelry looks a bit dull and dim, try this method. Follow the steps below.

NOTE: We highly recommend using standard dish soap and warm water for the cheapest way. But be sure to use dishwashing soap that doesn’t contain bleach, as this can damage your jewelry.

  1. Get a bowl and pour in a litre of lukewarm water and dish soap.
  2. Place your jewelry inside the bowl and ensure every part of your jewelry is soaked in the solution. Let it soak for 20 to 30 minutes. You can leave it for an hour if you want the best results.
  3. After an hour, remove your jewelry from the solution and gently scrub your jewelry using the bristles of the toothbrush. Ensure every bristle goes through the jewelry, so it can remove every dust and dirt buildup.
  4. After you have gone through with the scrubbing, rinse your jewelry with warm water and let it sit on a damp cloth until it's dry.
  5. Using a soft cloth, pat dries your jewelry. To ensure no water remains on your jewelry, tap it a couple of times until you see no more droplets.
  6. If you think this method has brought sparkle and shine, you can do it again until your desired results are achieved.

NOTE: Don’t use paper towels when wiping your jewelry; they can sometimes be a little bit too harsh and abrasive. Simple cloth would be fine.

DON’T: Using Harsh Chemicals When Cleaning

As we’ve mentioned, using powerful cleaners such as bleach can damage your jewelry. It might help you clean your jewelry the first time, but it can lead to dimming and dulling of your jewelry when used constantly.

While it would be a good idea to use typical household cleaners such as glass and window cleaners, we strongly oppose using these cleaning solutions. These are simply too harsh on your jewelry.

We strongly suggest avoiding these harsh products, as they can only do more harm than good. A dishwashing soap is the safer, more effective, and cheaper way of cleaning your jewelry.

DO: Take Off Your Jewelry If You’re Applying Something To Your Body

When you wear jewelry daily, dust, dirt, and oil buildup are inevitable. It is why one of the best things to do to avoid jewelry getting dull is to remove them when applying lotions, sunscreens, etc.

Like most products, they also contain chemicals that may dull your jewelry when used constantly. A hair spray and lotion can leave an unpleasant film on your jewelry, which loses its sparkle if not wiped.

So, be sure to remove your jewelry when applying to avoid going back to your room just to wipe off unsightly films within your jewelry.

DON’T: Using Ultrasonic Cleaner

While an ultrasonic cleaner will give you an amazing result, like harsh chemicals, it may result in damage to your jewelry.

Remember, ultrasonic cleaners use vibration when cleaning pieces of jewelry, and this vibration might damage your jewelry. When ultrasonic machines vibrate, they may loosen parts of your necklace, bracelet, or even earrings.

So, while they are considered effective jewelry cleaners, remember that the mechanism used for cleaning might damage your beloved pieces of jewelry. We believe it can only give you your desired results, but these cleaning methods might soon haunt you in the long run.

DO: Clean Your Jewelry Box

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of cleaning every piece of jewelry you have, we highly recommend cleaning your jewelry box or storage device. This way, your jewelry doesn’t accumulate dirt and dust over time.

A clean jewelry box goes a long way in keeping your jewelry in their premium condition. It is also why we almost always recommend buying jewelry boxes for people who own quite a few jewelry, as constant trips to jewelry stores for cleaning can be quite dragging.

If you want lesser trips to the jewelry store or bathroom, try investing in a good jewelry box. A good jewelry box has a few compartments intended for a type of jewelry.

DON’T: Clean Your Jewelry Where There’s An Open Drainage

Whether on the sink or bathtub, never clean your jewelry where there’s open drainage, as you may risk dropping your jewelry and losing it all.

However, if cleaning elsewhere is impossible, we highly recommend putting a cloth or a sieve on top of the drain opening. This way, if you drop your pearls or jewelry, they are safe, and you can get them easily.
