Turquoise
Ocean blues for the last month of the year. Our December birthstone jewelry brings the colors of turquoise and tanzanite to waterproof gold necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings, made to be worn every day.
Turquoise and Tanzanite, the December Birthstones
December closes the year with the colors of the sea. Turquoise is the bright blue-green of a tropical lagoon, one of the oldest and most loved stones in the world. Tanzanite is its deep, violet-blue partner, discovered only recently at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Between them, they cover every shade of the ocean, from shallow reef to open water.
Our December birthstone jewelry brings those blues to waterproof gold, from turquoise drop hoops and pendants to dainty rings and personalized birthstone pieces, made to be worn through the holidays and every day after.
The Story of Turquoise
Turquoise has been worn for more than six thousand years. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt were buried with it, and the famous mask of Tutankhamun is inlaid with it. In Persia, turquoise covered the domes of palaces and mosques, and its name comes from the old French word for Turkish, because it reached Europe through Turkish traders. Native American peoples have long considered it a sacred stone that connects the earth and the sky, and it remains at the heart of their jewelry traditions today.
Its bright, ocean-like blue became the birthstone of December, bringing a splash of summer sea to the coldest month of the year.
Tanzanite, the Newest Birthstone
Tanzanite was discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania, in a single small area near Mount Kilimanjaro, and it is still found nowhere else on earth. Its color is a rich blue with violet flashes, like the sky at twilight. It was added to the list of December birthstones in 2002, making it the newest birthstone of all, and a favorite for anyone who loves deep, dreamy blues.
What the December Birthstones Symbolize
Turquoise is traditionally the stone of protection, good fortune and friendship. Travelers carried it to keep them safe on the road, and it was often given as a gift to bring luck and happiness. Tanzanite is linked with transformation and new perspectives, a fitting stone for the end of one year and the beginning of the next. Wearing your December birthstone is a way to carry protection and hope into every new chapter.
How to Wear Your December Birthstone
Turquoise drop hoops are an easy way to bring a pop of ocean blue to the face, and a turquoise pendant on a fine chain looks beautiful alone or layered. A turquoise band ring adds color to a stack of gold rings, and a personalized piece in tanzanite blue keeps it subtle and elegant. Blue goes with everything from winter white to summer tan, so your December birthstone will be one of the most versatile pieces you own.
